SEO for URLsThe URL (Universal Resource Locator) is the location of a page on your website. For example, http://www.elevationheadwear.com/beanies.html is the URL of the beanies product page on Elevation Headwear’s website.
After choosing a domain name, optimizing the URLs for your pages is the next SEO step. SEO for your page URLs is important because keywords in the URL are a ranking factor and short and descriptive URLs can help with link building and user interaction. Like your visitors, search engines read a URL to get a clue for the contents of the page. Think about using at least one keyword in the URL, but stay away from keyword stuffing, this might get your page flagged as spam and provides a bad user experience (no one wants to visit a link called https:///www.yourwebsite.com/yellow-socks-blue-socks-green-socks) Most importantly, you want to embrace the idea of semantic URL. You want your URL to immediately make sense to users and describe the topic and content of the page it represents. The more unique and memorable you can make a descriptive URL, the more likely people will remember, share and link to those URLs. A string of confusing numbers or nonsensical keyword stuffing can really hurt your SEO.
Looking at the example above, you can see how the keyword "contact page" is used in the URL. You can also see that the URL is very clear, it tells you (and search engines) what the page is about and is relevant to the content on the page.
