Keyword Research ToolsThere are several useful tools to help you identify the right keywords and complete your keyword research projects. Keyword tools fall under two basic categories, SEO Tools that focus on keyword discovery and competition in search engines, and Content/Social Media tools that provide discoverability and trend analysis on platforms outside of traditional search.
SEO Tools1. Google Keyword Planner is free and can help you find new keyword ideas, understand keyword competition, and suggest other related topic for your site to target. The tool can also provide historical statistics on keywords as well as traffic forecasts for how they might perform in the future. The planner was built to help advertisers build Google AdWords campaigns, so there is extra data on Cost Per Click that you can ignore if you're using it for organic keyword research.
Unfortunately, recent changes to the Keyword Planner may obfuscate some of the keyword data for accounts that aren't spending enough with AdWords. The Keyword Planner also seems to conduct keyword grouping, which groups close keywords together and makes it hard to get accurate data. Keyword grouping includes stemming variants (like -er or -ing so designer and designing are seen as the same), grouping plurals with non-plurals and acronyms. Another Keyword Planner concern is that there tends to be a focuse on high value keywords, because the tools is built to promote AdWords campaigns. This means you may miss out on data and recommendations on uncompetitive terms. Despite these issues, this is keyword data provided directly by Google, so the Keyword Planner is always a must when it comes to keyword research, at least as a first check. 2.
