Help Build a New Weebly Feature

Membership login areas and individual password-protected pages are two of the most requested features for Weebly sites, stores, and blogs. We’re ready to starting building these features but we need some more feedback.

I agree with BJ. I am building a gaming website and I want users to be able to save their progress on games, so I believe membership creators are great ideas!

Hey Hubert! We still have the ability to have header images and slideshows, though there are a couple new themes that do not use header images. If you switch to a different theme that does have header images you should be able to add a header image/slideshow.

Hi Mateo!

Almost all of our themes support header images and slideshows (only a selection of the new themes to not have headers). If you check out some of the themes on the Design tab, I'm sure you'll find a theme with headers that will look great for your site. Thanks for commenting!

I agree, weebly features are really good, but your templates are getting old and most do not feature cool combinations of your features... please add some new templates, in variations, toe your new features in all templates, at least some more....

I think for what you are trying to accomplish, your website is pretty good. The one suggestion that I have is to make sure you proof read your paragraphs. I found a few spelling mistakes. If this is a project for your English class, then I know your teacher will find the errors also! Good luck to you! Nice website!!

Hi Kaitlyn, one of the first pieces of advice I received when I built my first website was to avoid using "click here" for anything - in web publishing terms it's considered old-fashioned and amateurish.

Also I noticed that you mention being a Pinterest addict - I am one too lol - why not add a Pinterest button to your site so people can follow you on Pinterest?

I'd also suggest that you might want to consider what exactly it is that you want your website to do. To me, it seems that your blog is the focus. In which case, I'd make the blog the home page, with about me and contact as secondary pages.

I like the header image, it's really pretty, and having a poll on the landing page is fun too - I had to answer it straight away! Thank goodness, my sister and I have been able to persuade our mother away from social media so far :)

I agree with the "click here" comment. I think the Contact page matches the feel of your site well.
Perhaps instead of "Click here to go to the advice column", you could say "Looking for some advice? I'm here for you" then keep the button below.

Both are great features to have especially if the whole aspect of the members log in area is all built into the weebly platform. I did manage to build a weebly login membership site for a client www.adonaycenter.com. However, the login is done through another site www.sentrylogin.com. I think it makes things complicated because the client now has to do with paying for 2 services on 2 separate sites while learning how to manually register and manage their clients through Sentry. Although, if this is the only way weebly can do it for now, it would still be better than not having it.

EXACTLY. If Weebly had every feature that 4 or 5 others had, any smart person would chose the company that had IT ALL. Partly its the reason I have not yet upgraded.

Personally, we can have some new features like this but membership tools like the ones you get on poppydog.com ( I use that for my weebly site) have already gone ahead and given the 14-strong members (lol, really small) I would not be telling them to switch platforms.

Both are very useful, we are going to start designing weebly sites for clients so I can see a lot of value in the login area for the site. These make them perfect for membership sites, so if it's a choice between them I would have a login area.

Both are important. But must include option to buy as a guest without creating account. And also new template should be introduced for the uncompromised design and looks of the website. Hope to get those update pretty soon.

I AGREE with this one. Not having a way for my customers to log in to an account on my shop is why I cannot easily consider moving to Weebly yet, as much as I want to. That is the big issue for me.

I also agree with the option for someone to purchase as a guest, though that might cause issues for the 'guest' down the road. It might be a good, quick option for purchases though.

I am also hoping this is added soon. I will definitely move if it is.

Agreed. Not having an 'accounts/customers' section is the only thing preventing me from upgrading now. I'm comparing about 6 different sites and Weebly has one of the best web creation tools, it's just missing this one feature that I need.

I would like this 'membership' feature to allow me to see a customers past orders as well so I can use it as a CRM tool while I am out on sales. That would be perfect. I also like the option of giving customers the option of checking out as a guest. That seems pretty standard.

Any timeline on when we might expect this feature?

These two features would both be nice, however, I have an idea for a third.

A way for designers to keep track of time spent designing a client's website.

A built-in timer feature that can transcribe to an invoice each billing period...that would be really cool!

In the meantime I use Office Time. It is cheap, a one off buy and you can get versions for IOS as well as desktop, but you do have to remember to switch it on

If you haven't already, check out freshbooks.com. It's an invoicing system that allows you to keep track of time on a per project basis. It's a few bucks a month but well worth it.

If you could also put in with that feature a stop/start timer option so that when you go for a coffee you don't need to log out, that would be wonderful.

Thanks for all your hard work!

Here are some addition public suggestions.

I would LOVE to see some parallax scrolling features, with options for multiple backgrounds, the ability to make a one pager (which is very popular right now). I've tried a multi background page through custom coding (www.thisiscali.com) which works okay, but is a tedious process to get into that code.

With that in mind, I would like the option to have multiple designated content areas. Images that can span the entire width of a page would be great too!

Better video embedding options, like a landing page that can feature a video... here is an example: http://thedeependdesign.com

Also, better call to action buttons, with more button options. An issue with a lot of CTA Buttons is on the mobile version is switched from the desktop version which results in design chaos. A big problem I keep on coming across is, say I choose a bright blue button to be on a dark grey background on my desktop site... well on mobile versions of a site, while the button changes to a grey button on a grey background, and there's no way to customize the mobile files. In fact, I'd like to be able to create an entirely separate layout for mobile, since it's just automatically generated from the desktop version's content blocks.

I totally agree here, especially with the CTA buttons. I would also love to see more options for linking in text (the ability to choose more types of link out options like nofollow, dofollow, open in new window, etc.). Right now most of that is controlled by adding a HTML element and is a pain to manually input each time.

Indeed, it would be really great to access and edit the CSS file of the mobile version ! it could technically be easy to implement soon (like CSS editor of the desktop version).

Eventhrough mobile feature is great, it's useless for weebly users, if it modifies text fonts and buttons style in a different way from desktop version. There is no consistency !

Membership login areas please, I've been wanting to create a membership site for some time now! My peers have been trying to convince me to get separate hosting for a WordPress site and then buy something like Wishlist Member. However, I have been digging my heels in, as I really would prefer to stick with good ol' Weebly :-)
Please, please, please, say you'll develop the membership login areas!

Weebly has brought multiple updates to their platform but none of the recents updates have enhanced the blog design.
Therefore, I request you guys to add an authors section, so people can see which author has posted which article. Additionally, they should be able to segregate posts by authors :)

Dear Pam, you've got an great site. Though, I think it is not attractive for visitors to see ads on a personal blog. A personal blog should be personal, and not commercial. When you do want to generate money with your site, I think you better should start an blog without any personal things related to the blog. Another tip: when you are writing a long post, it would look better when you use a 'read more'-line. This way, your blog's overview page doesn't become too long.

I hoped this will help you further with your blog and I wish you good luck.

Hey Steve! Some of our themes use the Site Title at the top of the page with an H1 tag (you can change the Site Title on the Settings tab). The only other way right now to include an H1 tag is to use it with the Embed Code element: http://kb.weebly.com/custom-html.html

If you wanted to add H2 tags, though, you can do that by dragging the Paragraph Title element to a page where needed.

I think the only thing that makes SquareSpace a better option for some websites is that their templates include pre-populated content areas that really help with design and page layout. With Weebly, you set up the template and then have to design and build all of the content yourself. This is not ideal for people who have no idea how to design in the first place. The pre-content areas in SquareSpace really help the design process by helping the user start out with a great design and then they just replace the greek text and photos with their own. If Weebly templates had this as an option, it would make Weebly truly the best cloud-based CMS in the world.

Absolutely agree! When I first used a Weebly template I was expecting it to look EXACTLY like the sample template. Had no idea that I would essentially need to re-create that sample myself if that's what I wanted my site to look like.

Most of us are not designers. Make it simple! SquareSpace definitely has the edge in that regard.

And . . . it's the ONLY piece of eCommerce I need. I was wondering if there might be a possibility to pay for just that extra piece rather than having to sign up for the whole Business Plan. Thank you.

Hey Zorica! We don't offer features à la carte, so you'd need to upgrade in order to take advantage of the Digital Products feature. We do offer a 1 month term for a Business upgrade, so if you don't want to pay for a year upfront it's a great inexpensive alternative. Thanks for commenting!

If you need digital delivery, just implement Gumroad.com onto your weebly site. It's free, and super easy to use. All you do is insert the HTML tag provided by Gumroad onto your site, and you're all set. Takes about five minutes.

Go look at my site to see it in action. If you click the "Purchase" button, a pop-up appears that let's people get my digital goods. And again, it's free to use and 100% compatible with Weebly.

I remembered from long ago some digital delivery service only being $5/month, tried looking for it, and could not find it, but found something better, I believe.

Here's an article that explains how you can set up your own digital delivery using PayPal: http://www.howtomakeawebsite.ws/2009/05/28/set-up-digital-delivery-with-paypal-buy-now-buttons/

First you upload your file to some file storage like Mediafire.

In PayPal you create the usual "But Now" etc., buttons that you have next to the item you are selling. The customer uses the "Buy Now" button and pays for the item. After that PayPal has the option--this is when you're creating the button--for the customer to go to any page you want them to go to. You enter that URL where you have your file stored and the customer pushes the "download" button. Done.

I can't believe I didn't figure this out myself!

Both ideas are needed password protected pages and member login are two different services that are needed for websites today. it is an important service. I have had to find a work around to do this so far and would be much better off if you would have it built in I had to take one of my customers to another service I did not want to use...

Weebly does not yet have the option for different passwords for different pages, which I really need, as I know many other users do, too. But this is not an issue since Weebly said they'll build both; they just want to know right now which we prefer they build first.

I am missing Google SEO:
- H1 for page titles (maybe you can add this in future)
- Imagenames as uploaded and not numbers as it is now

H1 and Image names are not the most critical concerns about SEO here with Weebly ... since we can get H1 titles as Adam said (several times ;) , and image names would be great, but are not essential.

No one have asked to be able to "Edit Permanent links of Pages" as we can do it with Blog Posts. Weebly is the only tool (I know) not allowing users to edit permalinks, and this is a very big issue about SEO ... and for foreign languages with "symbols" and "accents" in page titles (they are not properly converted, and we get ugly permalinks).

This is the main critical feature to get soon !

Extremelly happy that you will have membership sites. I currently have a few creating ways I created my Weebly membership sites using sentry log in. It is actually not that bad.....but I would prefer a seamless way just use Weebly. It is extremely important that you have a way that people can pay for access using Paypal or other online payment system so that customers can pay for a membership and can be accepted or denied access to content.....Do you have a estimated date for this feature

And .. full versions in foreign languages ! ... not like Weebly with a mixture of french/english, spanish/english, etc.

Help! At 5pm EST every night Weebly becomes so slow that I can't load one page to add pictures for my customers. Am I on the same servers with all of the free sites? It's not my browser, cache, ISP or computer speed, it's only Weebly, and only during high traffic times. It happens in all browsers. WHAT is going on? It has become a huge problem, thank you guys, you're the best.

Disappointed that I have not heard back from customer service about a problem. The woman said she would follow up quickly but it has been almost a week and I have heard nothing. Sorry to post here but email request has not been returned. I am having trouble with video uploads. and, like post above, have tried everything and it is only with my weebly sites.

What I really need is being able to edit the URLs of individual pages (called permalink in WP)--it is a big issue for me when a non-Latin alphabet language page is created, such as Russian. The URLs now have multiple digits instead which are usually extremely long. Can't wait for the update...

Agreed with you Dan ! This is a very big issue on Weebly, I'm a french WebDesigner working on many weebly sites for businesses, I have the same troubles. And it's a big concern about SEO too.

Expand our platform to developers and really increase your capabilities. Create a open source type of platform with Weebly to enable plugins and the creation of additional widgets. This will make your community increase both on the user and developer side. I am sure this increases your support requirements, however revenues increase with requirements.

I need a Persian Editor for my website site: www.shubayr.net as many of my articles are in Persian and weebly does not have Persian [Farci] editor. Also I am using another websites to demonstrate my academic documents to university admin staff and weebly is not able to give me a password different from my website password to protect my academic documents. It would be better when I pay at least I have password for admin staff to see my documents and password for myself to login to weebly and edit my articles, etc. These two passwords now is one meaning useless in weebly!!! please trouble shoot this.

You are great, but if you are adding new features, would you please, oh please ad a feature where my pictures have the same name/title when I upload them?
I have a site with many pictures and photos, but it is important for google that my photos have a title name , if someone is searching with google images. My pictures cannot be find because weebly gives them another name ex. 1552548_orig . If anybody has some tricks or tips for me to solve this problem, please give a reaction. Thanks very much.

I'd love to see a "recent posts" feature for the blog as well as a way to add block quotes into a post. I like Weebly, but I miss some of the more advanced editing features of Movable Type.

Hey John!

If you use the feed URL of your blog with our RSS Feed Reader element, you can use it to show a list of the most recent posts to your Blog. To get the URL of your RSS feed, right-click on the RSS icon in the sidebar of your blog and copy the URL.

As for block quotes, you can use our block quote element in blog posts as well. While editing a post, scroll down and drag the block quote element to your post to add one.

I think that it would be good to focus on the purpose of this and there would be a few different points.

* Member Interaction. Social media and community
* News letters and notifications.
* Store customer profile.. Login to look at all your previous orders.
* Members have the ability to have a simple profile similar to facebook and add other members as friends.
*strong connection features between the site owner and the community
* Member sign-in via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google & more
*Star rating for community to like and share internally
*Appoint multiple administrators
*Granular content moderation
*Anti-spam protection. Block IP from the network

I love these updates! I plan on making a new site in a little while and love these features. One question, do you guys have any plans on making an option to have the mobile design separate from desktop design. Although synchronizing this may be helpful to some people, it has been very profound that in many cases mobile sites have been extremely successful from moving in a different design language from their desktop counterpart. For example I might want to have more text on the desktop site since there is typically more space compared to the smaller screens on mobile devices. Love the work, keep it up!

Yay! I can't wait! It has been a long time since Weebly has posted blog posts so are you guys still working on the login stuff? And when do you think you are going to be done? And could we have like hidden pages until people login into your website? I really like tygras.com and I really want to do kind of the same thing but with a different kind of animal, and people can buy animals and stuff with coins and stuff and it's a game. I would be sooo grateful if your developers added fields in the store for service-based businesses. We are an editing business charging per word in an article/essay and we do not want to charge in blocks (1000 words - 1250, etc.). If this is in the works already, can I get an estimate of when it's done? Or do you know of any competitors with this capability (I really hate to ask that considering I like my Weebly layout).

It would be great if we could have the right-click disabling feature, it's a real problem for photography websites.

Also, when we upload galleries, it would be nice if the number/name of the file could be copied directly with the file.... right now I have to sit and write them all in myself and it is madness. But it's the only way my clients can order their images....please Weebly do something about this!

I like the idea of a membership login.
I write books and my first one is due to be published in may or june. It would be neat if I could have a membership program for my readers. I'm trying to reach basically 10-18 year olds and that age group loves when they can get involved by being a member and getting exclusive offers. Great idea.

Hey Chris!

First you'll want to create a hidden page on your site that contains the link to download your file: http://kb.weebly.com/hidden-pages.html

Next, create another page called "Download", then drag a contact form to the page and add whatever fields you need in the form: http://kb.weebly.com/contact-form.html

Finally, in the form options click on "Confirmation" and use the option to pick a page from your site and choose the hidden page you created earlier.

When customers fill out the form they'll then be sent to the hidden page where they can download the file you uploaded.

I don't understand what you mean exactly. If it can be done on a page like this which is built by Weebly. Why can't it be done on my blog page? I created a testimonial page in the form of a blog format. It would help if when people visit that page they can see it. I know if I click on the "comments' link on my blog or testimonial page then the comments open up the way it does here. So, there's no automatic way to make so the comments always stay displayed. Hi again! This is how most blogs work; the main blog page will display a list of posts with a link to the post itself (which then displays all of the comments). What you might want to consider doing is hiding the main blog page from your navigation, then adding a new page on the Pages tab and choosing the External Link option.

You can then enter the URL of the blog post itself: http://www.uzodesign.com/4/post/2014/02/share-your-positive-experience-with-others-please-include-what-service-you-received-your-name-or-company-name-simply-click-on-the-comments-link-go-a-step-further-by-copying-and-sharing-this-link-to-this-page-on-your-facebook-or-twitter-thanks-for-yo.html#comments

Customers who click on "Testimonials" in your navigation will be directed right to the post itself and will be able to see comments as well as leave their own.

I think Weebly should have a feature that allows you to edit the specific html code of any existing page on your website and not just the Cascading Style Sheets. I wanted to be able to create frames and other things like that with raw html without embedding it. I hope you consider this request and I look forward to being able to edit the html in the page.

It's best if we could offer login not only to members but it can be useful for an office use (for internal) these login must be integrated with a registration page. Admins must have control to what is a required field for the registration even the Photo Upload. And admin must be able to give access to specific pages for the members registered - like the forum page or the blog page, calendar, video access. Email broadcast among those who are registered and or a chat feature. If Weebly can do these haha Ning will definitely have a big problem. I have used membership sites for 7 years straight and there are lots of beautiful and amazing concepts that you can add with a Weebly website!!!

Hey Robert! We do indeed have password protection, but as it is now you can only have one password for all of the password protected pages of your site rather than individual passwords for different pages.

Have lots of pages that I'm working on and not completed because see an idea and like to just start a webpage to save time and not forget to do it as feel like will never get done.

Have it so are not displayed in toolbar, but they are still showing up in searches.

Tried password option and had all kinds of problems as seemed to override all my webpages and don't want people going to any webpage of mine and get a password code as seems like it reduces your credibility.

Instead would like to have another platform option where I can leave my work in progress so it is shielded from search engines until I'm ready for that to happen.

Right now you are vulnerable if don't finish the webpage, and once you try and add a password to one page, you are forced to have a password on all pages. Big problem if you have to go and take the password off all the pages you already have made. Could be a hundred or more.

A multilingual site option. A dropdown that switches out the current page tree for another that you can build up other content.
E.g. from .com .com/home to .com/es .com/es/home.
It's really the persistent Header and Footer that gets in the way.

My wife and I do maintain a site for our church, and we really would like to see this. There may be some pages we want everyone with a login to access, but others that only certain sub-groups should be allowed to access. It would be nice to see that extended to a full group structure where individuals can be added to different groups and that group (or multiple groups) could be used to grant access. At the same time, some groups could be given permission to post comments unmoderated, either site-wide or on a page by page or blog by blog basis. I like using groups for the simple reason that the one or two extra steps of overhead pay off when adding new pages or blogs. And when someone needs to be suspended for bad behavior, it is much quicker to remove them from a group and shut them down when they are damaging your site, rather than having to look for where they might have permission.

I have just read through this post and am frankly a little confused. I want to start a new website, for long term development, for the promotion and teaching of languages. For this I will need an area where students, teachers, parents and yes, I can safely, and securely log-in with no fear of my persona being compromised. This protection should extend throughout the entire use of any of the website or its content. The other issue is where features that I might want are missing. Can I freely and easily use third party add-ons or if necessary add, delete or modify existing HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL. I look forward to your comments on these matters.

Now that you're making a membership element, please provide a chatroom and possibly a forum that is integrated with this. And one more important request. Please do not make it like a 'shared membership service' like the webs one. I want a unique membership provider with which you have to sign up individually with the site and not like if you have a webs ID, you can log into any webs site only if you have a webs ID.

Stop trying to add new features and focus on making the existing ones actually work. I used to be a big fan of Weebly...I'm now forced to start everything over again on a better platform after 2 years of building out my Weebly sites due to the editor not functioning properly. I've let 2 of my Weeby Pro plans expire and it's just a matter of time before I terminate my 3rd and final Pro plan.

How accurate are your website stats? because I also have google analitics and the stats from my weebly site does not match my google analitics. That's one of the features offered on the paying plans that you offer and if it's is not accurate, then what is the point of having it?

You should definitely work on this because this was one of the reason I bought the pro plan, but the stats are way off.

Hey Pam!

The difference you're seeing is based off of how we track versus how Google Analytics track. We track by IP address which will include not only human visitors, but also bots, spiders, and so on, whereas Google tracks by cookie which notoriously undercounts. To get the most accurate picture of how many actual people are visiting your site, average the two stats together.
