We're extremely excited to announce our newest release: Powerful design options, a new theme gallery, and a design contest with $13,000 in prizes!

Powerful Design Options

We've re-thought the "Design" tab, and separated it into 3 categories: Favorites, Design Options, and All Themes. As part of these new features, you can now choose the font type, color, size and line height for your site title, paragraph titles, paragraph text, and links!

Theme Gallery

The new theme gallery is under the "All Themes" section. Once you click here, you'll find that you can now browse many more themes at a time, view more information about them, rate your favorite themes, and mark them as favorites.

When you mark a theme as a favorite, it will show up in the front of the "Favorites" section.

Even more exciting, all designers are invited to participate in the Weebly theme community. You can browse the Weebly themes that are available at http://themes.weebly.com/.

Design Contest

To kick this all off, we're launching a design contest with a $10,000 top prize, and $2,000 and $1,000 second and third prizes. The contest is being judged by some of the most talented designers on the planet, and the deadline for submissions is April 30th, 2010.

The contest is not just open to United States residents, but also to anywhere in the world where valid!

It would be great if Wordpress themes could be imported into Weebly - there are hundreds available and MANY are really professional.

For the love of literature, will someone PLEASE design a theme for authors and writers?!

I am in desperate need of that and do not know how to design a theme, so if you can do it, you'll have my vote. All authors need to have their own website, so I would think it would be very popular.

There is one weebly theme now with a fat blue pencil, but it is too cutesy for serious nonfiction authors such as myself.

Thanks Weebly for everything. Your site is tops for me.... and has actually saved my bacon many times by giving me the opportunity to work and earn a little money to help me get through these difficult times and for that I am very grateful. There are one or two improvements that would really help many small time designers like myself:

1) The ability to have a "SWF" or flash header.

2) Ability to do reservations (for a small hotel). ie. someone can go online and enter dates and an email be sent to the site owner at the same time something show up on a calendar that a reservation is pending)

3) Paypal in other currencies (euro)

4) Ability to "copy" an item to another page (currently only move is available)

5) Insert tables

Weebly is amazing. A powerful tool in our virtual world. I have been able to serve several non profit companies that cant afford regular webmaster design prices. This gives me the option to work with them and make them look awesome and up to date with the high price guys. They are all very happy :-) I will definitely try to win that 13k.

Just for all the designers - Don't churn out mediocre stuff all the time. Pay attention to small detail - it goes a long way in impressing future users.

and in reply to someone else on here: A .PSD is a layered Photoshop document, not an image with a different ext.

yes kind of confusing as to what the rules state... but I have emailed them on this matter & not sure but thinking all the voting that is going on if people are going & voting, which looks like they are by the posts being made to go look & vote for my entry... those votes will not be consider & after the judges pick the top 10 finalist all that will be reset for the commuinty to then go & vote for I think is a 2 week period of time according to the rules...
here is the last reply I recieved to my email... hope it helps to clear up some of the confusion... :)

Once the top 10 designs are chosen, they will be voted on by the Weebly user base. The rules are clearly stated in the weeble site so I dont know why are you so confused about this. When you said "Those votes will not be considered", then what's the point of putting that orange button. Of course it matters. Judges will still consider the votes aside from quality when choosing the top 10 designs even though its their discretion to choose you or not.

this is what stated in the official rules "6. DETERMINATION OF WINNERS: During the Promotion Period, each qualifying contest entry will be displayed with a “Vote for This Theme” button on the right side of the page. At the conclusion of the Promotion Period, the official contest judges will select the top 10 finalist entries. Selection of the top 10 finalist entries is at the judges’ discretion and will take several factors in account, including but not limited to, perceived design quality and vote totals during the Promotion Period (Round 1). Once the judges have determined the top 10 finalist entries, the Weebly community will vote on the 10 finalist entries for a 2 week period to determine the Prize winners (Round 2)"

I think this is more fair than the contest rule. I mean what if someone just finished and uploaded his entry a day before the deadline? He will not have that much vote. So I think this is better. =)

I would love to see a design where you can place your Logo in the header block!
Thank you Weebly - I had set up a site on Homestead (Intuit) last year and 2 on Weebly this year with more to come. Weebly is much better than Homestead and I told them that!!!I am offering my assistance to many small businesses in my area to set them up on Weebly. If I can do this anyone can!

i understand your point MOI/JAJohnson but still you are referring to the 'questionable email' and not the official rules.

notice the word 'primarily' used in your email, it means for the most part, judges will based it on the quality design but still (according to the official rules) votes will also take part in determining the top 10 finalist.

you said it fair yes but again its not the rules. when you wrote in your message "votes will not be considered' then you are confusing people from getting votes from other people. cant you see getting votes is also part of weebly's marketing strategy and i'm sure they will give points to those will get a lot of votes.

in other words, this contest is like based on criteria (includes but not limited to quality and votes) - for example: 80% quality 20% votes - something like that.

so i hope that clears your confusion.

well in some ways I think your right but if you read the offical rules this is what it states for round one of the contest >

"DETERMINATION OF WINNERS: During the Promotion Period, each qualifying contest entry will be displayed with a “Vote for This Theme” button on the right side of the page. At the conclusion of the Promotion Period, the official contest judges will select the top 10 finalist entries. Selection of the top 10 finalist entries is at the judges’ discretion and will take several factors in account, including but not limited to, perceived design quality and vote totals during the Promotion Period (Round 1).

"and vote totals during the Promotion Period (Round 1)."

so it does state that the votes in this phase will be considered so guess that's why many of us want to be sure we are having Lookie's to our submittions... :)

I personally think that voting is not an objective way of selecting the quality of design. I mean, someone may have tons of friends and by telling them to vote, his/her design will get tons of votes, regardless of the quality of the design.

If it's up to me, only the judges (which are professional in their field) can give an objective measure about the quality of a design.

and I do believe it really is only 10% or less the number of votes an entry gets... but by us posting it up on our facebooks & twitter & our websites & sending emails out it gets the word out of Weebly... so that helps them in the long run... :)
it will be the pro's that pick what they feel is the best & most original 10 designs... and once that is pick then it will be up to the commutity to pick the top 3... all 10 pick by the pro's I am sure will be very good... :)

zlatko are you talking about round 1 of the contest? if so, then you're right. the quality of designs doesn't rely on votes entirely and the rules didn't mention about that either.

but on round 2, only the votes will determine the top 3 winners and its no longer in the hands of the judges.

round 1 - selecting the top 10 designs will be based on:
a. design quality - judges decisions
b. votes - little percentage i think but still it matters.

round 2 - selecting the top 3 winners will be based on:
a. votes only (votes accumulated from round 1 will be reset to 0)

Hi Goodman... not sure that has really been stated yet... but the contest here runs until April 30th... then the entries are judged by the panel of professional judges and they pick what they feel is the top ten... then the rules state they will then be placed up for the Weebly communitiy to vote on the winners... so hopefully you will be seeing some of the templates up toward the middle to the end of next month...
sorry couldn't be of more help but am sure Weebly will post more on it once the April 30th deadline is over for submitting... :)

I've been with weebly now for just about a year. I am contiously impressed by the improvements and the jam packed features of your free service, and now this: an opportunity for some lucky designer to make it big!
You leave the competition in the dust, gasping for air! The recent announcement by Ning to eliminate their free service will cast off a great number of disgruntled clients. I recommend that they look at weebly! Your premium services are very affordable (unlike the gouging that Ning will force their premium clients into, should they decide to stay) - I have to commend you and hope for your continued success. I am sure you will see quite some growth come May, when Ning clients are left high and dry.

although there is voting now I do believe that it will only count for about 10% of why the theme is choosen to be one of the top ten, they will then be voted on only by weebly community...
right now it can be voted on by anyone you can get a link out to... not sure how it will be set up for the final voting but I am sure Weebly has it figured out...

My 16 themes have all been approved and might I say I'm very proud of all them spending about 2-4 hours each day working on these designs was worth it and hopefully it can earn me a spot at the top 10!

Mostly all my website themes are 80% based on Graphic Design|Artist Portfolio website themes but some include themes such as Mothers Day, Bands, and Earth Day.

A message to everyone:

Be sure NOT to use images that have copyright and aren't free stocks (like 99% of the images that you find on the web).
No one is allowed to use those without permission of the owner.
IF you use images like these, and Weebly use them (I guess they won't since I'm sure they know the consequences) they can get into big trouble and probably have to pay a sum like X.XXX dollar, depends on the picture and owner.

So don't use images in your webdesigns that aren't yours! Only images that are free and no credit needed can be used :)

I have a question. How are the top finalist chosen? I'm curious because all of you are trying to get votes for your entry, when in fact, the finalist selections are done by the panel and not by popular vote.

The final 3 winners are decided by user votes. Is this correct?

And Lastly, how long does it take to get reviewed.

BTW this system is kind of confusing. If voting is going on right until the submission deadline, and the judges pick their fave designs based on quality as well as number of votes, the person who submits his/her design on the 30th of April is at a severe disadvantage, unless the votes are rest, in which case it makes no sense to vote right now...

LC from what I can see the voting part is still opened, only submission are closed as of midnight last night... I am sure that there is going to be alot of entries for the judges to get though(just by going though the ones we have all posted here, & am sure many didn't even post their entries here) & I don't think that a big percentage of their judging is based on votes, maybe 10%...
once the judges pick the top ten then voting will be of inportance & I am sure the top ten will all be informed & placed up for voting all at the same time...
good luck to you & everyone, I know I have my fingers, toes & eyes crossed this way (LOL)... because there are some really nice entries that came in just in the last week & many more thoughout the past few weeks...
will be nice to see all the new ones that can be used here up in the selection area... again good luck everyone... :)

I made a theme, with a tree, and the leaves are the buttons for other pages.

Does anyone know how they choose the ones that get accepted or not? I've seen some pritty lame themes go through, and I think mine is at least a little better than some posted. The only thing i'm worried about is the measurments- like if things are out of proportion would they neglect the theme or fix it on their own?

Rocky as long as you followed the guidelines given in the contest rules it should all be good... I don't believe they would work with anything on an entry though... not sure when you submitted yours but some of the ones I submitted took over 5 days after submitting them to get an email that it was accepted... I am sure at this point they are still working on approving entries that went in in the last couple of days... from the looks of posts here many waited until the end to submitt their entry so it might be a few more days before they can get to all of them...

@Rocky Nenshati:
As long the used tree is a free stock image that doesn't require credits to the original owner, it will be ok. But if you just found that tree image on google or whatever, then Weebly aint allowed to use it.

A lot of themes here use copyrighted images (ALL images that aren't free stock, are copyrighted) and that will bring Weebly alot of trouble if they use it. Weebly also knows this so they will probably skip those themes.

Ow, using images as an example (like an example header, example pictures in the content, etc.) are allowed since those will be removed anyway.

It is a shame Weebly didnt let you submit text for where you got your resources from for the theme. It is standard template practice to supply links to any Creative Commons (free to use commercially) images, fonts, icons and vectors and I have my list ready to go, but was never asked for them... I do hope I'm not disqualified under the assumption the images are copyright, because they're not :/

I hope votes will not be taken into account, as pointed out in some comments above. The voting system works with cookies, meaning you can vote for yourself a thousand times in a few minutes if you just disable cookies and reload the page after voting.

Heck, I don't even understand why there is a voting system yet. I thought judges picked ten designs for their quality as "designs for Weebly", after which Weebly USERS (i.e.: not family members, not friends) could vote (once per account) for which design suits their needs best.

Ok, I believe many people are having the same questions and concerns about the voting period and method....Most here have probably submitted some kind of an entry into a contest at sometime, just to be beat out to someone that entered something that "didnt even qualify" but because it was a popularity vote the won or (they disabled their cookies) so they got the most votes.

These are the Weeble rules...[my comments in capitals only for clarity].

During the Promotion Period, each qualifying contest entry will be displayed with a “Vote for This Theme” button on the right side of the page. At the conclusion of the Promotion Period, the official contest judges will select the top 10 finalist entries. Selection of the top 10 finalist entries is at the judges’ discretion [ISN'T THIS THE MOST FAIR WAY] and will take several factors in account, including but not limited to, perceived design quality and vote totals during the Promotion Period (Round 1).[IF YOU TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE VOTES FROM THE PROMOTION PERIOD, THIS IS WHY YOU ARE READING THE COMMENTS ABOVE FROM APPLICANTS. THE PERSON THAT SUBMITTED ON DAY ONE VERSES THE PERSON THAT SUBMITTED ON DAY 30 IS AT A HUGE ADVANTAGE] [ALSO THE PERSON WHO DISABLES THEIR COOKIES IS AT A HUGE ADVANTAGE] Once the judges have determined the top 10 finalist entries, the Weebly community will vote on the 10 finalist entries for a 2 week period to determine the Prize winners (Round 2). These are just my thoughts and concerns that I think a lot of people may have. Weebly is a great community with a cool contest which would be great to do again. I agree, the voting system is not an objective measurement of a theme quality, as it can be easily manipulated. That's why I only showcased my designs on my FB profile and then left it for the destiny to decide :)

wow even more new ones yet... wow...

to Diana, I think Weebly is trying their best to get the community involved more. I do think they are trying to build their client base & by giving a chance for the community to place something into a contest is fun & this way you also get the Weebly name out there for others to see & hopefully come & get a free site & then hopefully a pro one... this will all in the long run benefit Weebly... I am sure their designers to can make up nice web sites but this way everyone gets to join in & it will be fun in the next round to pick our favorites... :)

I'm going to be perfectly honest here. It's constructive criticism so please respect my opinions or not :)

I'll start with the positive: I love how there a lot of designers on here that are not getting enough attention with good *** quality work and here we see well... not so good web designs.

If your going to be voting for yourself like 1000 times (I know the votes don't count yet) at least put an effort to your designs. I know your trying... but come on really put an effort! Don't show the bad. Show the good. Because it honestly kinda p*sses me off seeing cheap design layouts which can be done a little bit better.

Hope I didn't get anybody offended or upset but hey smile :) it's the real world, ya got to deal with it!

But honestly for all who entered this contest just be proud you did the best you can because I entered this contest and I strongly believe and hope my designs make the top 10 but ehhh it's like the lottery here I'm against the world! but wooo... we'll see.

Ive seen some awesome themes submitted, but i dont think Gaads would be in my top 10...

I really don't see whats so good about it. The background is just a simple texture which can be created in PS3, it has simple beveled & embossed body segments, the lady up top does not have a transparent background it just uses the average color in the layer behind it.
If you like it for the green design on the front page, then you don't like the theme, you like Gaads artwork...

I dont want to be mean or anything, but I think that the design should not get so many votes.

The best theme I have seen is from Shinto Shyam, http://themes.weebly.com/vote/590111869682958055/

It only has 12 votes... I think it should have well above 4000 votes and get 1st place.

Rusty I am a bit puzzled by the way people are coming in & stating Gaad's website theme's are so wonderful, awesome ect... ? but then I was think he is maybe sending people he knows here to do that just to keep posting his sites and not trying to be mean beacause although I have been designing for a while I do most print work & this is my first try at websites... I had to learn as I moved along designing them but I did learn & I so enjoyed the experince & am still studying website design just to learn more... but Gaad's designs don't do much for me they are ok but not something I would want to use... I know everyone see's things different so maybe there are that many that like it but for me like you stated Shinto Shyam design is really nice quailty work... although still not my taste it sure looks very professional... there are many that I have voted for now I am thinking over 50... wow there sure are alot for the judges to go though now & pick out just 10...
I do wish everyone the best & will just keep my fingers crossed this way...

hummm am still puzzled by those votes & some of the comments... ???

Another thing I don't quite understand about Gaad is how he posts, in some places you can see him double post and also you can see a difference in his typing.

A few posts above you can see him spell his name differently, one of them is, "Shamasuddin Gaad" and the other is, "Shamsuddin Gaad" without the A after the M. Of course this could be a spelling error but both of the figures end the comment differently. One of them say, "sHaMaS" and the other one says, "Regards, Dr. Shamasuddin Gaad"
It seems to me that one of them is more professional than the other because I cant imagine a doctor saying, "sHaMaS".

I might be suggesting alot, that he is not a doctor but a group of people? Or someone is copying him? I dont know.

LOL... sorry LOL... yes I do see so much about these posting to just be someone trying to get more votes or make the votes he has look legit maybe... ??? maybe if you use all 10 of your websites as a pro you can somehow use different sign in names maybe... I have a pro account but I haven't looked at all that yet...

well I am sure when all is said in done now of it is really going to matter in this contest... so just keep thinking great things & soon I hope Weebly will get a post up with the top 10... :)

Hello Guyz. I would like to share my views too. I compared Shinto Shyam and Mr. Gaad's themes. Both are nice works, i don't understand why rusty and johnson are so curious about Mr. Gaad. hummmmmm they indirectly like his theme): why you both don't watch other themes too like arjuns or some other works. Well neither i m promoter of gaad nor of shinto. I m graphics designer and when i compare both works i feel mr. gaad has used his self designed image in green portrait which requires immense hardwork and is commendable work-nice piece of art whereas shinto has simply picked up the very common themes which r running all over the world-just like power point themes. Simply stating Mr. Gaad has used all the graphical tools to create background image and portrait which seems to be self-designed (What u say mr gaad?). Shinto's have just put the three images thats it- no design work of graphics- .On the other hand Mr. Gaad has used the theme according to a web page design which contains a simple technique of user friendliness that is one main page with frame. sory shinto but technically i found gaad has done more hardwork than u and it deserves voting.

One more thing I feel using "sHaMaS" and Dr. Shamsuddin Gaad itself is the proof that he is artist): best of luck to all u contestants…..

ok lets just keep with the contest here... it will be up to Weebly to do the sorting of things... tough job I think but someone has to do it... :)

well it's been a week do you think the judges have gotten though all the entries?

when do you think they will post them?...

I do remember the rules said once they go up they will be voted on for 2 weeks... but they also said the contest would be over May 15 there or around there... not sure how long around there is but thinking before the end of the month... well I hope anyways...

If weebly wants to hold a fair contest, they need either jud the final winners by themselves or open a secure poll that works. because right now, people like Dr. Shamasuddin Gaad are disabling their cookies and voting thousands of time for themselves.

total abuse of the system. a lot of you are doing this. it's obvious.

scrap the votes and pick the winners based on quality.

Faramarz I don't think that voting is going to carry alot for the judges maybe 10% but really they are smart people... most of the judging is really about the design useable here at Weebly & I am sure that when they pick & get the 10 set up for judging they are aware of this kind of thing & will make sure it is as fair as possible... I think just to keep a positive vibe going now is the best we all can do...
with that said...
